When we observe the people around us, we find that some can deal with some circumstances better than others.

For instance, there are things that you could easily tell your mom that you wouldn’t dare tell your dad!

The ability to do this is an attribute of emotional intelligence.

This term was introduced in 1990 by Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer. They defined it as, “a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action”.

Further research by scientists such as Daniel Goleman and David McClelland revealed the impact that emotional intelligence had on business ventures.

Their studies concluded that people with higher emotional intelligence were more successful than their peers.

The following reasons explain why this is so.

1.Emotional intelligence helps you understand yourself

Can you identify all your habits? Do you know why you do 90% of the things you do? Are you aware of what evokes your happiness, sadness, or frustration?

These are some of the questions emotional intelligence can help you answer.

Many people spend years chasing after success, and they only attain a little. This is because they take too long to figure out what works for them.

Emotional intelligence helps you find what works so that you can spend your time doing what you love!

As the saying goes, if you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.

2. Emotional intelligence helps you build better relationships

No matter how you flip it, we all need each other. Many of the most successful people in the world have a team. They might be skilled on their own but working with a team makes all the difference.

Your ability to build lasting relationships is predicated on your emotional intelligence.

Can you manage the expectations of others? Can you empathize with them? Can you motivate those around you to do their best?

With high emotional intelligence, you attract people to help you achieve your goals!

3. Emotional intelligence helps you to find solutions quickly

When things go wrong, many go into “fight or flight” mode. Adrenaline kicks in and unless you’re trained to operate under pressure, you’ll do or say things that you’ll regret later on.

Emotional intelligence helps you choose the best response to every situation. It allows you to analyze the problem and come up with a solution that satisfies all the parties involved.

Some of the world’s best negotiators have high levels of emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is a must-have! Some people are born with it while others develop it over time. However, you can spare yourself the trouble of living without it by educating yourself.
